Welcome to the page for Foundation Students - those who spent the first term of their high schooling in 1959 in the Sandgate Town Hall.
A Pro-Tem committee of Foundation Students comprising Jan Fraser (nee McEwan), Glenda Marsden (nee Atkins), Kay Rienks (nee Gillingham), Michael Percival, Ian Allen, Bryan Gregory and John Patrick (Spokesperson), has been at work since September 2008 at first canvassing the concept of organising what has been called a "Get Together" just for Foundation Students to be held in conjunction with the 50th Anniversary Celebrations planned for all students on the Saturday Night and Sunday, 2nd and 3rd of May 2009.
We obtained the list of Foundation Students from the back of the IBIS magazine 1959, Vol 1 and set ourselves the task of making contact with all 150 to enable the compilation of a list of email addresses and telephone numbers. Support for the concept amongst the 60 or so who we had contacted before Christmas was sufficiently encouraging to warrant the concept being developed further.
Now February 2009, we are pleased to announce that our "Get Together" is comprised of three events to which all Foundation Students are invited. They include:
- Fri, Sat and Sun night, accommodation for out-of-town Foundation Students at the QCWA's Ruth Fairfax House at the Roma Street end of Gregory Terrace;
- Fri night 1/5, a dinner for all Foundation Students at Ruth Fairfax House;
- Sat 2/5, a BYO morning tea/picnic lunch at Moora Park Shorncliffe for all Foundation Students.
Details on these three events are below under separate headings.
Our search for the 55 or so remaining Foundation Students continues... see the list of those still missing below.
Now that our events are in place and our list of contacts for Foundation Students is two thirds complete, we are planning to extend this invitation to students who started in 1960 and 1961 with whom we shared the various extracurricular activities during those early years - sporting teams, drama productions, magazine committee, dances and morning parades.
If you have anything to offer our Pro-Tem organising committee by way of ideas (or indeed finances), including ideas for this website, please contact any of our committee members or spokesperson John Patrick in Townsville:
