Junior Secondary Curriculum Handbook - Year 9 2017 (PDF, 2180 KB)


The transition to high school is assisted by offering:

  • an experiential day in December for Year 6 students coming in Year 7
  • a staggered start to the school year with Year 7 and Senior Leaders attending school on the first day back after the holiday
  • a Year 7 camp held in late February / early March each year
  • a Year 8 camp held in mid October each year
  • Year Level Co-ordinator, Junior Schooling HOD and Deputy Principal who work with junior school students.
Sandgate focuses on a delivering a curriculum which meets the needs of its students. In Year 7, 8 and 9 four signature programs are offered:
Students gain entrance to the Academic Achiever’s Program on the basis of their Year 6 results, a reference from their Year 6 teacher and performance on an entrance exam. Students in this program form one class group for all core curriculum areas. The curriculum is designed to be academically challenging, based on creative thinking and problem solving. Students are engaged in projects that develop their higher order thinking and deep understanding and create opportunities for them to work co-operatively to explore complex problems and arrive at reasoned, supported conclusions that they present imaginatively. This course leads student into Authority subjects (OP for university) and may enable students to begin university studies in Year 11 and 12.
 
The Master Music Program offers students a classroom course at a more advanced level than the regular course available to all students. Students who can already read music to some extent, and who already play an instrument or sing, are given opportunities to accelerate their learning and skill development. The course is closely linked to the Instrumental Music Program. Master Music students complete their Arts Key Learning Area solely in music in Year 7, 8 and 9.
Immerse IT caters to students who wish to study core Mathematics, English, Study of Society and Environment and Science using an individual laptop. Students use their laptop to deliver information in interactive and engaging ways and students develop and apply higher level ICT skills in their learning. One class is offered in Year 7, 8 and Year 9 with students accessing online resources and able to store their laptop in secure lockers, whilst in Year 10 students apply their advanced ICT skills into their regular classroom program.
 
The school offers Academy of Sport Programs (Rugby League, AFL, Soccer and Netball) to students who have identified talent, or significant potential, with the opportunity to develop their skills and abilities in all facets of their chosen area. Students formally enter the program in semester 2 of Year 7, with their chosen sport appearing as a subject on their timetable for the remainder of Year 7, 8 and 9.
In addition, two Middle School structured classes are offered to students in Year 8 who may have difficulty transitioning between primary and secondary schools. These classes have fewer teachers and are staffed by teachers with a primary or middle school teaching background.
 
The middle school curriculum is organised around the eight Key Learning Areas (KLAs): English; Mathematics; Science; Study of Society and the Environment; Health, Sport and Physical Education; The Arts; Technology; Languages other than English. Literacy, ICT and personal development are embedded across the curriculum. In Year 7 and 8, students are exposed to all KLAs. For Year 9, students will select 3 elective subjects (see Year 7-9 Handbook) that are studied.
