Vocational education

Vocational Education and Training is for students who want to develop work-related knowledge and skills. It is offered in a number of different ways including:
  1. Stand alone VET delivered by schools, TAFE institutes or private providers

  2. SATs which allow students to work for an employer and train towards a recognised qualification under contract of training while completing their school studies. It the SAT is not completed by the end of Year 12, students may convert to a full-time or part-time traineeship or a full-time apprenticeship.

Year 12 certification/statements

Queensland Certification of Education (QCE)

All students are registered with the Queensland Studies Authority (QSA) in the year they complete Year 10.  When a student is registered, the QSA opens an individual, web-based learning account for them.  The account is password protected and can be accessed by the student.  School and other learning providers report students’ enrolments and results to the QSA, and this information is recorded in the individual learning accounts. To be awarded a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) students must obtain at least 20 credit points. A student must also meet literacy and numeracy requirements and have studied 3 subjects for 4 semesters.  If a student completes Year 12 without achieving their QCE, their learning account will remain open for a period of 6 years and any QCE-related learning can be recorded after the student leaves schools.  When the student meets the literacy and numeracy requirements and achieves 20 credits, the QSA will award a QCE at the middle or end of the following year.

Senior statement

Every student will receive a Senior Statement at the end of Year 12.   This statement will be a transcript of their learning account, recording all the learning undertaken and results achieved.

Tertiary entrance statement

OP (overall position) eligible students will receive a Tertiary Entrance Statement which records a student’s OP (overall position 1-25), FP (field positions 1-5) and Queensland Core Skills result (A-E).  OP and FPs are used as the basis of offers to university and TAFE Diploma courses.

VET Certificates

Students can be awarded a Certificate I, II or III if they complete the relevant requirements.  If a student is ineligible for an OP, VET at Certificate III level and SATs may be used to calculate a Tertiary Entrance rank.  This rank can be used for university entry.
