Sandgate Environmental Committee

The natural world inspires us and calms us. It is a source of medicine and energy. The natural environment seems immense but is unique and fragile. And for all the exploitation that it has faced, and continues to experience, there is hope!

The Sandgate Environmental Committee consists of a team of passionate students who are taking direct action to protect, preserve and promote that wondrous environment the we inherited and one day we will pass on to them.
The Sandgate Environmental Committee provides students with the opportunity to think globally and act locally. In 2015, the Environmental Committee began a reforestation program and planted over 70 rainforest trees on the school grounds to combat climate change. They created an awareness campaign on power usage and prevented over 500kgs of carbon from being emitted into the atmosphere. And in just 3 days they inspired students to collect over 4000 pieces of rubbish to protect our beautiful creeks and bay. But that’s just the start of the opportunities for students.
The Sandgate Environmental Committee also provides leadership opportunities. As a member of the Brisbane City Council’s Green Heart School initiative, one passionate student is elected to be a representative on the Student Environmental Leadership Network. SELN Representatives meet with the Lord Mayor, Brisbane City Councillors and environment experts to lead change in their respective schools.

But wait there’s more! This year we are one of three schools in Brisbane to be involved in the Future Leaders Program. This is an Environmental Leadership program coordinated by the Centre for Sustainability Leadership and Boeing Australia. Students undertake environmental projects while being mentored by Boeing Australia.
Although many of the environmental issues we face today feel overwhelming, the Sandgate Environmental Committee is providing real hope. In 2016 the committee plans to undertake many more exciting projects. The opportunities for students to contribute are endless and all who are interested are welcome to join.
