Our school

Sandgate District State High is a school which has been strongly connected to the Sandgate community since 1959.  There is a strong sense of belonging among the students, teachers and alumni, demonstrated by the large number of anniversary occasions which are organised to celebrate various milestones in the school’s history.

Sandgate is a northern Bayside suburb in Brisbane.  It is currently undergoing a process of gentrification, with many first home buyers also attracted to the area. A number of generations of the one family have chosen to continue to reside in Sandgate and the suburb is characterised by a well-established sense of shared history and community.

Sandgate is a Band 11 co-educational school which has a current enrolment of around 1042 students in Years 7 to 12.  In 2015, the school welcomed its first Year 7 cohort.  The principal, Mrs Jeanette Gentle, is in her 10th year at the school and there are a large number of long serving staff in the school who are passionate about maintaining the high standards and expectations of the students. A number of past students have also returned to teach at Sandgate, which reflects their commitment to both the students and the school.

There are a number of features which make our school special, including our culture of respect; our appreciation of difference; our focus on participation and opportunity; our open communication; our excellent facilities and our staff commitment and dedication to do what it takes to achieve our vision, which is to Expand the Horizons of our students. We judge the success of this vision by the number of students who are accepted into university, further education and training or full time employment after they leave Sandgate District State High School.

Our values of Be Respectful, Be Work Ready and Be Your Best capture the essence of what our school is about.  These values drive everything we say and do at Sandgate and ensure consistency of professional practice throughout the school.

The way we achieve our vision is to continuously work with our teachers and support staff to improve pedagogy.  We do this by relentlessly implementing our improvement agenda in every classroom.  Our improvement agenda priorities are:

  1. Implement a pedagogical framework based on the Dimensions of Learning

  2. Growing pedagogical leadership in the school through observation, feedback, modelling and coaching

  3. Implement School Wide Positive Behaviour.  This involves explicitly teaching students expected behaviour , focussing on rewarding positive behaviour and being clear about the consequences of unacceptable behaviour

  4. Literacy

  5. Numeracy

  6. eLearning

  7. Pathways, opportunities and partnerships

Our facilities are excellent and include modern classrooms with new furniture, white boards and wireless connectivity. Sandgate has a well-maintained oval, basketball courts, pool, gymnasium and sports hall, a state of the art Science facility with six laboratories, visual art facilities, performing art facilities, computer rooms, library and resource centre and a student piazza which forms a central meeting point for students and student activities.  ​​
