Chaplain

Sandgate DSHS is fortunate to have a full-time Chaplain.  The Chaplain's office is located in C block ground floor opposite the Uniform room.

The role of a chaplain is to:

  • Support students exploring their spiritual beliefs and world views

  • Facilitate and provide pastoral care for students and be a role model to them

  • Work with staff to deliver a range of activities in the school including camps, sports days, breakfast club, coaching sporting teams, life skill/personal development programs,

A school chaplain is a safe person for young people to connect with at school, providing a listening ear, caring presence and a message of hope. They care for students struggling with a range of issues which may include family problems, confusing relationships, peer pressure, friendship difficulties, low self-esteem, bullying, depression, suicide, drug and alcohol issues and/or physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. Chaplains run positive, fun activities for young people, both in and out of school, and foster a supportive, caring school community (e.g. Splash Out, Youth games, school camps, Harmony Day). They also provide spiritual support and direction for the school community.

Our school chaplain is employed, trained and equipped by Scripture Union Queensland. A Local Chaplaincy Committee (LCC) receives monthly financial reports to ensure prompt and transparent administration of accounts. The LCC may be comprised of local business owners, P&C association representatives, school and local church members.

The salary of the Chaplain is derived from a number of different sources:

  • Two days are funded by the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations under the National School Chaplaincy and Student Welfare Program

  • The other three days are funded from:

    - Voluntary donations from the school community

    - Donations from local Christian churches, businesses and members of the community

    - Fund raising activities
