Guidance counsellor

Guidance services are available at the school for parents and students. Problems of a personal, educational or vocational nature often cause concern to secondary school students and an attempt is made to have counselling readily available. The Guidance Counsellor’s duties concern three main areas of advice:

Information for courses at school

Students sometimes have difficulty in choosing subjects which are compatible with their vocational and academic ambition. Advice is given to students which enables them to select subjects which are appropriate vocationally and which are most likely to lead to success in school.

Information on job opportunities

These days there is a bewildering array of occupational information available to students. The Guidance Counsellor’s chief aim here is to inform students on the occupational options open to them. Occupational choice should take into account both level of academic ability and the student’s various interests and competencies.

Help with personal problems

Students' personal problems sometimes intrude into school life. We may find that a particular student is unable to work at his/her best at school because of some upset, with its origins either external to the school environment or within the classroom itself. Students are encouraged to participate in solving these problems through the use of a variety of coping strategies. The Guidance Counsellor is also involved in assisting students with behaviour problems to modify their behaviour.

Parents can make appointments with our Guidance Counsellor Mr Scott Wishart by phoning 3869 9822 or email swish1@eq.edu.au. The Guidance Counsellor's room is located in the Administration Building.

Students requiring assistance from the Guidance Counsellor, the School Nurse or the Administration should report to the Office Staff, usually during recess (or otherwise during an emergency). The Administration, Guidance Counsellor or School Nurse may then be contacted, or appointments made.
